The New Dutch Academy (NDA), established in 2002, is an international award winning orchestra, specialising in early music, performing on authentic instruments. The NDA is known for its engaging and dynamic performances and particularly for bringing newly re-discovered 18th century works onto the concert platform. The NDA is based in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Conductor and Artistic Director of the NDA is the Australian/Dutch conductor and viola player Simon Murphy. The NDA's member musicians, variously from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the US., are the new generation of leading international early music specialist performers.
The orchestra's repertoire ranges from large scale Baroque works such as Corelli's Concerti Grossi and Handel's Water Music to works of the mid 18th century symphonic schools of Mannheim and the Netherlands through to the large scale symphonic works of later 18th century/early 19th century masters. The NDA's chamber soloists ensemble performs more intimate repertoire with various programmes of works of Bach and Dutch contemporaries, as well as later repertoire.
The orchestra also performs many works newly discovered by the NDA's own “Research Lab”. This Lab carries out scholarly and practical research which fuels the NDA's concert programmes, radio broadcasts, multidisciplinary projects and CD recordings. Through these activities, the NDA aims to deliver new insights into 18th century music through re-discovering, re-evaluating and re-introducing lost, forgotten or ignored repertoire and through taking fresh looks at historical performance practices, musical aesthetics, instruments and instrumentation.
