Press Release (1 May 2010)

Inaugural Pauwvijver Concert 6 June 2010

The Hague’s Baroque Orchestra, The New Dutch Academy (NDA), is delighted to announce the inaugural “Pauwvijver Concert” in Wassenaar.

The international, award winning NDA Orchestra, led by its conductor and artistic director Simon Murphy, will present at 11:00am on Sunday the 6th of June 2010 the inaugural “Pauwvijverconcert” in the picturesque gardens of the Town Hall (De Pauw) of Wassenaar.

At this special event, the NDA Orchestra will perform a programme including Bach’s Orchestral Suites no 1 in C and no 2 in B minor, Vivaldi’s Concerto for Flautino and Orchestra in C, Van Wassenaer’s Concerto Armonico no 1 in G, selected arias by JS Bach and WA Mozart, as well as music from the NDA’s new CD introducing works from The Hague’s own court symphonic tradition by Francesco Zappa. Soloists for the event will include Georgia Browne (Baroque Flute), Amy Power (Recorder), Elizabeth Dobbin (Soprano) and Caroline Kang (Baroque Cello). The NDA is a founding partner of the initiative and is ensemble in residence at the “Pauwvijver Concert”.

The programming celebrates the area’s rich musical heritage, featuring works by 18th century composers resident in the area such as Francesco Zappa and Unico van Wassenaer himself, as well as music by famous visitors to The Hague/Wassenaar area such as Mozart (including his concert aria “Conservati Fedele” written in The Hague in 1766) and music by their contemporaries, including Bach and Vivaldi.

The festive concert performance is open to the public and is free (gratis).

The event is family-friendly.

Surrounding the concert, various refreshments will be available for purchase on the lawn of the Town Hall.

Background:

The Pauwvijver Concert is a new concert event, presented in a unique setting, aimed at profiling the rich musical heritage of the area of The Hague, Wassenaar and Voorschoten and at enriching the contemporary cultural life of the area through concerts of dynamic and engaging programming, presentation and performance. The plans for the event were recently unveiled by the Mayor of Wassenaar, H.E. Jan Hoekema, in a press conference at De Pauw in Wassenaar in mid-April 2010.

The upcoming, first Pauwvijver Concert performance on the 6th of June 2010 marks the establishment of an initiative which, it is hoped, will become an annual music tradition in Wassenaar, enriching the area with a new and highly valuable cultural and social event.

The event’s partners, which include The Hague’s Baroque Orchestra “The New Dutch Academy” and Gemeente Wassenaar, are joined in the hope that the event will develop over the coming years into a landmark cultural event for the area – along the lines of a “mini-Glyndebourne” of Wassenaar.

The first edition of the Pauwvijver Concert marks the Wassenaar Lions Club's 30 year anniversary. The Pauwvijver Concert receives financial support from the Wassenaar branch of the Rabobank and Gemeente Wassenaar.
