** Together, father and daughter Reichardt created the enlightened phenomenon known in later 18th century as “The Poets’ Paradise” or “Reichardt’s Garten” (Giebichenstein, near Halle. It was, due to its natural beauty and its highly creative atmosphere, an immense inspiration to its many illustrious guests, amongst whom numbered literary heavyweights the likes of Jean Paul, Novalis and Goethe. The latter personally called Reichardt’s Garten the “Herberge der Romantik”. The wife of JF Reichardt and mother of his daughter, the ground breaking singer-songwriter Luise Reichardt, Juliane Reichardt (Bendova) was the daughter of Franz Benda, concertmaster to Fredrick the Great and friend of JS Bach. She was the niece of Georg Anton Benda, composer to Frederick the Great and inspirator of amongst others Mozart. The NDA’s 2009 Festival explored Reichardt’s Garten as one of the ultimate examples of the late 18th century salons and highlighted the critically important role of women in the salon circles of the time such as Louise Reichardt (1779 – 1826), Caroline Bardua (1781 – 1864), Belle van Zuylen (1740 – 1805), Élizabeth-Louise Vigée-Le Brun (1755 – 1842), Fanny Burney (1752 – 1840) and Jane Austen (1775 – 1817).
